Over the counter analgesics like Aspirin, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen are very effective for the pain caused by toothaches. These medicines reduce the inflammation that is basically responsible for toothache pain.
Your dentist can advise you about the proper dosages and drug interactions. NEVER, EVER, place an aspirin tablet on a painful tooth. This "old wives tale" is extremely harmful. Aspirin is highly acidic and will severely burn the soft tissues of the mouth. When a tooth hurts, this indicates a serious problem. It will not go away by itself. Call your dentist for advice on pain control . . . and an appointment.
