The main difference between overthe- counter and professional tooth whitening is in the strength of the bleaching solution. The professional strength solution provides a more noticeable change in tooth color and the whitening is more stable, or long lasting. Many solutions available through dental offices contain antisensitivity ingredients to reduce the most common side effects of tooth whitening. The whitening solution is applied to the teeth by using a custom fitted tray that is made from impressions of a patient's mouth. The tray is made from a very thin plastic material. This allows the solution to be safely applied to the enamel at the best concentration.
Patients usually wear the tray and the solution for thirty minutes twice a day for seven to ten days. This provides excellent results for most people. Some severely discolored teeth will take longer to whiten. There are several different methods dentists can use to whiten their patient's teeth. Each dentist finds a technique or product that works best for them and their patients. If you are interested in brightening your smile, ask your dentist which technique would work best for you.
Over-the- counter products do a nice job adding brightness and vitality to your teeth. Dentist-applied whitening provides a more noticeable color change that generally lasts longer.
