American dentists are proud of the progress we have made in getting children off to a lifetime of good dental health. In fact, the American Dental Association has designated February to emphasize the importance of children's dental health. Because of advances in preventive dentistry, kids today face far fewer cavities than kids of twenty or thirty years ago.
Many teenagers and young adults have never even had a cavity at all. Parents are more aware of the importance of good oral hygiene and proper diet for their children. They are bringing their kids to the dentist at an earlier age, and more frequently. Dentists are using many techniques to prevent cavities. Fluoride treatments make enamel harder and resistant to decay. Plastic sealants for decay-prone teeth are a major benefit. Brushing and flossing instructions by the hygienist and dentist teach children to remove the plaque that causes decay.
Because dentists stress decay prevention, more children are finding their dental visits to be a pleasant experience. Kids are less fearful of going to the dentist. Fewer cavities mean fewer uncomfortable or scary ~rocedures. I have found that a good trme for the first dental visit is when a child is about three or four years old. Getting an early start is the best way to ensure a lifetime of good dental health.
